In terms of viticulture, Austria is classified as a cool climate, which means that the wines produced here will be characterized by higher acidity and will be dominated by citrus notes.
This is the perfect climate for strains such as Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc.
Grapes with a thick skin, like Cabernet Sauvignon, would have trouble aging in the cool Austrian climate.
In Austria's cooler climate, white grape varieties mature best. Austrian wine law covers 35 regulated grape varieties - 22 of them belong to the category of white wines.
Grüner Veltliner is the most widely grown grape variety in the country. The most famous regions are Wachau, Kremstal and Kamptal. Most Grüner wines resemble both Riesling and Sauvignon Blanc in style, so if you're a fan of these varieties, you'll love Grüner as well.
